  4.     Is a lesbian couple a family? Yes, a Minnesota appeals court
  5. ruled last week in a case that has been a focus of gay-rights
  6. activism since 1984. Ordering that Karen Thompson, a
  7. physical-education professor, be granted guardianship of her
  8. brain-damaged lover Sharon Kowalski, the three-judge panel said,
  9. "Thompson and Sharon are a family of affinity, which ought to
  10. be accorded respect."

  12.     Thompson has been fighting for custody since an auto
  13. accident left Kowalski brain damaged and quadriplegic eight
  14. years ago. Kowalski was in a nursing home under her parents'
  15. custody until 1989, when her father concluded that his heart
  16. trouble and the strain of the legal challenges prevented him
  17. from continuing as guardian. At that time Thompson was bypassed
  18. in favor of a close family friend.

  20.     Thompson's cause won widespread support from gay-rights
  21. groups, which want homosexual partners to enjoy legal rights
  22. comparable to those of married couples. The decision, says Paula
  23. Ettelbrick, attorney with the Lambda Legal Defense and Education
  24. Fund in New York City, a gay-rights group, "begins the process
  25. of recognizing that lesbian and gay couples share the kind of
  26. commitment that married couples do."
